New York Fashion Week and its opening was celebrated with much excitement and flair -- the first shows, the magazine parties and of course, the fabulous emerging designers who showcase their soon-to-be-hit collections at the trendiest spots in NYC. We were totally blown away by the wearable artwork of Maria de Guzman, the Australian designer whose powerful presence in sexy and wearable feminine fashion is taking over down under and on our East coast, one flirty slip dress at a time.

Below is a candid look at Maria's rise to fashionable fame, revealed in the designer's very own words. We are still busy gazing at the pics from her Candyland Fashion Show, presented last week at Sky Room Times Square.
How did you first become involved in apparel design? Have you worked with other labels before designing your own?
I have always been interested in clothing as expression. In high school, I majored in Design and Tech. I made a few dresses for friends and private clientele and my design career snowballed after that.
I have designed for Sassy Dolls in Sydney (www.sassydolls.com.au), Australia and they want to stock my collection exclusively.
I have designed for the Being Born Again Couture fashion show (www.beingbornagain.net) where famous and emerging fashion designers collaborated with artists to form a couture garment each. That was an amazing experience.
What season and year did you debut your first namesake collection?
The Maria de Guzman collection debuted in 2009 in Australia. My designs are for unique, sexy, elegant girls that unleash a hidden passion within. They are playful, feminine, comfortable and wearable, minus the hefty price tag.

3 or 4 items you consider "must haves" for any fashionista?
Party or cocktail wear and sophisticated elegant evening gowns are a must have! (We can't agree more)
Which factors that most inspire you to create your fabulous fashions?
I choose fun, exciting themes like the colours of candy to create my dresses. I create dresses with a mixture of flirty colors and luxe fabrics perfect for spring or summer fun.

I just had my New York fashion show for Fashion Week in the Skyroom. It was Candyland themed with candies every colour you can imagine, bright ribbons and just gorgeous.
